Elizabeth Kalman made her first mosaic piece, a flower pot, in 2010 while visiting her sister-in-law, Nantucket scrimshander Lee Papale-Kalman. Together they practiced basic mosaic technique using porcelain tile on terracotta pots. She saw the possibilities for building kitchen backsplashes using pattern and form that would be both functional and suggestive of the natural world. She rapidly transitioned to glass tile and stained glass tesserae to create joyful artwork for family homes and beach houses around Charleston.
